personally i think dolby is the way to go as far a sound i do not know what nintendo's motives are for making sound for the wii proprietary but the wii better have supreme sound we already got a taste of the wii and all its goodness at E3 now we shall see what lies in store for the sound..i personally would like to hear mario in surrond dolby pro logic...but i guess its to be continued..heres the article about nintendos decision about dolby digital audio:
The lack of an optical output on the Wii means no Dolby Digital 5.1
IGN has uncovered an interesting technical bit out of some official Nintendo Wii documentation that was sent out to development studios. Apparently, the Wii will not have an optical audio output, meaning the console will not support Dolby Digital 5.1.
According to the documentation, "Optical digital output is not supported." It doesn't get any clearer than that.
... the Wii will not have an optical audio output."
In comparison, both the PlayStation 2 and the original Xbox have optical audio jacks. The GameCube does not.
What the Wii does have is a proprietary audio/video jack that provides the users with a few different options for connecting the console to their own home setup, including composite video, S-video, and component connections, but all of them have basic stereo audio cables.
At E3 all Wii games were running in Dolby Pro Logic II, which is basically simulated 5.1 channel audio. While many Wii games probably won't necessitate digital audio, most gearheads can tell the difference between digital and analog surround sound.
Nintendo has yet to release the final hardware specs for the Wii, so there is a chance that an optical audio out will be included in the console at launch. But I wouldn't hold your breath.
