May 25, 2006 - Although Nintendo pulled back the curtain on its Wii console and innovative new controller at the Electronics Entertainment Expo 2006 in May, the company's executives stated that there were more hardware secrets to come. And with the E3 revelation that the Wii-mote featured a built-in speaker, enabling players to hear separate audio cues from their games, most assumed the next logical step: a built-in microphone, too.
Nintendo itself has remained hush-hush on the subject, but history shows that the company is no stranger to microphone-enhanced gameplay. Games like the N64-based Hey You, Pikachu! and the GameCube-based Odama both made use of microphones that players could use to direct on-screen action.
But perhaps the most convincing argument for a built-in Wii-mote microphone comes in the form of a newly registered Nintendo website URL: wiikaraoke.com. Wii Karaoke, in other words. For now, the site redirects users to Nintendo's official online destination, but it is nevertheless a possible hint of things to come.
Nintendo itself has stressed that it wants Wii to appeal to non-gamers to create fun, party-friendly environments. IGN Wii has in the past editorialized that Wii could do to videogames what karaoke has done for social activity: facilitate multiplayer interaction for all age groups and simultaneously strip away any barriers to enjoying the experience. But if the recently registered URL is any indication, Nintendo could be attempting to bring Wii and Karaoke together.
