PostPost subject: Nintendo's corporate briefing: declassified! Reply with quote

Mario factory releases full transcript and video presentation of its recent management policy briefing that details its vision for the Wii.
By Tor Thorsen, GameSpot

Two weeks ago, Nintendo's top brass held a media briefing in Japan behind closed doors. This week, the company made a translated version of the meeting available to the public. The video and accompanying PowerPoint presentation can be viewed via Nintendo's investor-relations webcast partner, irwebcasting.com.

Unsurprisingly, the presentation focuses on the success of the Nintendo DS, which Nintendo now claims has greater market share than the PlayStation 2 in Japan. In one chart, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata displayed how the DS has sold 8.43 million units in just 18 months in Japan--outpacing the adoption rates of the both the PS2 and Nintendo's best-selling platform, the Game Boy Advance.

Iwata also talked up Touch Generations, the subbrand which targets nontraditional gamers such as seniors and women. The division has enjoyed phenomenal success in Japan, as Iwata illustrated with another graph showing off how Touch Generations' top title, Brain Age: Train Your Brain in Minutes a Day, has defied the usual downward postrelease sales trend.

On its own site, Nintendo also released the transcript of a Q&A session held after the event with Iwata and legendary game designer Shigeru Miyamoto. When asked about the exact price and launch date of the Wii, Iwata said he "believe[d] we will need to announce the precise price and launch date of Wii in or before September this year." He also reiterated his belief that, unlike the PlayStation 2 and Xbox 360, the Wii will not be sold at much below its manufacturing cost. "We do not intend to lose a great deal of money from the hardware sales," he said.

Iwata dodged questions about whether Nintendo intends to lower its software prices to promote adoption of the Wii. "Many in this industry once appeared to believe that marking down hardware prices or attaching free software was the only way to expand the installed base," he said. "What is notable today is, people are actively purchasing a 15,000 yen [$130.69] DS or a 16,800 yen [$146.37] Lite just because they want to play 2,800 yen [$24.39] software."

Iwata was then asked about how he expects Wii sales to stack up compared to the GameCube, whose third-place finish in the current-gen platform race has been considered a disappointment, given Nintendo's former console supremacy. The executive was blunt in his appraisal: "Wii will be a failure if it cannot sell far more than GameCube did," he said. "In fact, we shouldn't continue this business if our only target is to outsell GameCube. Naturally, we are making efforts so that Wii will show a far greater result than GameCube." Later on in the Q&A session, he would predict that Nintendo expects to ship 6 million Wii hardware units and 17 million Wii software units during its current fiscal year, which ends on March 31, 2007.

Iwata also tacitly admitted that the GameCube had not lived up to expectations. "When we launched GameCube, the initial sales were good, and all the hardware we manufactured at that time were sold through," he said. "However, after this period, we could not provide the market with strong software titles in a timely fashion. As a result, we could not leverage the initial launch time momentum and sales of GameCube slowed down."

Then it was Miyamoto's turn. A questioner asked the Legend of Zelda creator how he thought consumers would react to the Wii's dramatically different, motion-sensing control scheme. "We believe that we have already reached to the stage where we need to show the new vision for the whole entertainment," he said. "This is why we have decided to alter the game-control interface significantly, not just slightly." Displaying his trademark playfulness, Miyamoto added, "I have just been trying to make something fun."

Naturally, the subject of the Wii's name came up, and Iwata was quick to shoot down conspiracy theories that the moniker was some sort of elaborate hoax. "I am one of the people who have decided this final product name," he said. "Of course, I am not the only person to make this decision, but I have never thought that it was a mistake to name it 'Wii.' I understand that a great many people have already accepted this product name. When someone has some hesitation today, we'd like to make efforts so that they will come to like this name in the end."

Genyo Takeda, general manager of Nintendo's Integrated Research & Development division, also chimed in on the process of making the Wii. "Talking about the process on how we come up with new console ideas, Wii development was the hardest in my own experience," he said. "Nintendo has developed NES, Super NES, N64, and GameCube, and when we looked back, I felt that we were just rushing forward following Moore's Law, or just making new products in the linear extension line following the evolution of semiconductors. Now that we have broken away from the boundary, we are committing ourselves to see and exploit the technologies in order to extend the entertainment into any direction. I think we have reached the level that will allow us to do so."

I really just hope Wii does better than GC and N64. N64 did well, but not good enough. I also hope he doesn't get too attached to this "touch generation" and leave us hardcore gamers hanging while collecting the few hardcore 3rd party titles.

I think they are very optimistic. The wii is an awesome idea but wont really catch on in the American crowd. One you look like an idiot when you play it, Also it seems like you have to stand up when you play and I cant imagine someone playing game sfor hours standing up. Also nintendo today is seen as the Option for kids many people just pass up nintendo games. The reason the ds has done so well is becuase of third party developers and a fun system. The wii cant depend on nintendo it needs third parites. The wii will do better than the gamecube but in america the wii will be third. In Japan it will be second or first but overall I cant say.

Also note all I have said is my opinion, I might be wrong. But let me say this I was one of those people that loved the idea of the DS, and my personal opinion is that nintendoo should concentrate on portables, but I dont see this happening seeing that nintendo makes so much money becuase of low hardware costs.

If you have issues regarding the way you look while playing a videogame, when you're probably already not the best looking guy/girl in town, you have issues. The American population is getting tired of point and shoot games, its the same story different day. Oooh better graphics, gimme a break. I wonder what actually looks more like an idiot: someone who moves a controller and what happens on the screen responds to the reaction you made, thus a distinct connection between player and game for observers, or someone who stares dumbfacedly at a tv screen pressing buttons in any which manner, with no distinct connection with controller input and game for observers.

Watch someone with a controller in their hands. This is why lots of people don't get videogames. They look at the person and not what's going onscreen. And a person has absolutely no appeal sitting there pressing buttons.

Last time I heard MS is working on a new, innovative controller for Xbox360. He showed his love for Wii-mote in his late speech. IF 360 gets a sensor enabled controller, America which currently is in MS/360 hands, will STAY in MS/360 hands. Halo 3 with motion sensing abilities would be kool. If that happens the only major competition for 360 would be PS3.

Fallout_red, if MS created a motion-sensitive controller for the X360, not only would it outrage the gaming fanbase as a gimmick to keep up with Nintendo and Sony, it would cost them more on a console already losing them a lot of money, and wouldn't catch on because previous games wouldn't support it, and developers would have to painstakingly learn how to use it in a short amount of time, just like the Warhawk scenario. I wouldn't count on it.

time will only tell who's gonna come 1st on the next gen of consoles.Nintendo has a chance if they get good 3rd party support, and of course they need to make great 1st party titles, although they are the best at that , I"ll buy the Wii theres no doubt , because the control interaction is a fresh idea to gaming, this next gen war is gonna be very interesting and we"ll have to wait and see,who comes out with the biggest piece of the pie.

I don't really think this artical adds much to what was said earlier... Brain age doing great, DS selling even more. This is good news for nintendo, don't get Me wrong. But, they seem like A broken record player.

Fallout_red, I don't believe that for A second. You would have to buy an add on or extra controller in order for that to happen. Which means not everyone will be able to take advantage of it. It would probably end up like the eye toy (little support) , 6 button Sega Gen controller (some games used it few required it) GameBoy camera (little support). History shows add-ons do not fare to well at retail. MS could prove otherwise but I doubt it.

If it goes well, good, because I got every single nintendo console but nes... I seriously hope that they do better. If not if there is no more Nintendo for me there is no more console gaming. Sony and Microsoft are nothing compared to nintendo... Sony has got real good games but are all third companies... meanwhile all Nintendo good stuff was most from them.

If still for any reason if people are ignorant and yet dont want to buy this system It might be the end of nintendo... wich I really hope not. Gamecube is way bad in Australia, some gamers havent ever touched or played a gamecube (many of em) now that is really sad.

as a gamer who has owned with my borther) every game system back to the SNES, i'm glad to see nintendo branching out and not being afraid to inovate. It seems that today every company is afraid to come out with something totally new. Everyone is just making a game system with better graphics, or a car with better gas mileage, or a computer with a faster processor. Props to nintendo for breaking tradition with the DS and the Wii.

Well, there's one thing for sure that the Wii has over the Cube. The GCN-GBA connectivity really sucked and was underused, but now that everyone who's anyone has a DS (figuratively), plus the fact there's no wires, DS-Wii connectivity should be a big thing.

I think the PS3 (and if it happens the 360) motion sensing capabilities will eventually be abandoned in favor of pure analog stick/button controls. I'm one of the people who truly believes the addition of it to Warhawk at E3 was pure focus-group product testing. If they had been thinking about it for months, as they claim, there would have been more games to demo with it. NINTENDO DOMINATES THE INNOVATION DEPARTMENT! MS and SONY DON'T HAVE S**T ON NINTENDO! I don't think sony or ms have the cajones to stay fresh with the idea. Nintendo on the other hand has a bunch of pure geniuses who not only think outside the box, but they take the box, beat the s**t out of it, burn it and throw the ashes into a lava pit. Bring on the Wii!

The Wii is certainly starting to show that people are far more interested in it, rather than the PS3, Sony might come last this race, purely because of their pricey system, with Nintendo's excellent support it has already (large amount of third party developers, and cheap development costs) I think it's going to have WAY more games than the Cube.

The 360 already proved itself as a worthy console, like the X-Box and PS2 did the last console generation, I think the 360 and Wii are coming out on top this race.

once the wii comes out it will be popular for a while but will fall short , barley selling more then the GC. The motion sensor thing is gonna get old and annoying, doing the same thing, with most if not all of its games. Its a nice idea i admit. But once halo 3, MGS4, GTA4 come out, it will all come back to graphics and great games u enjoyed in the past, but so much more beautiful in HD!!. So Sony will be in first , second xbox360 and lastly Wii.

I do believe Nintendo is right. The Wii will appeal to a broad audience... I've had the evidence right before my eyes for a long time, but only realized it now.
My sister actually plays (other than the Sims) videogames, more specifically Warioware on the GB Advance w/ motion sensing technology. And she loves it!

And that's what will give the Wii the crucial edge in this console war.

Hello my name is Jeff and I play games 8 hours a day or more.

Nintendo is far from alienating it's hardcore gamers.

I switched to Playstation after the slow start that was N64 (which did have some fantastic titles mind you but still)

I'm very eagerly looking forward to playing some good old mario and zelda again.

In closing I have but one question to all you flaming microsoft fans.

What the heck is so good about Halo seriously? I played the first game and saw no incentive to pick up the second. Why are you all so fixated with such a bad game? Go play some Half life.

a MS motion controller would not be new or innovative since nintendo did it first. their whole system is based around this new controller and appealing to more then just 13-35 year old males in gaming. sony is making a motion sensitive controller AFTER hearing about nintendos and all the hype. MS is working on a motion controller AFTER hearing about nintendos and all the hype. so what i see here, sony and MS feel that this new controller has the ability to take over gaming. otherwise why copy? its like cheating off the kid who you know has the wrong answers. if you are going to copy/cheat copy off the smart kid.

Mmm... the thing is that some people are persuaded by the crowd, but the solution is to ask yourself WHAT THE HELL DO I WANT?? I think first you have to try things first before you start begining trash talking that nintendo Wii is gonna be a failure, damn it even sounds dumn when you say that nintendo is stupid for taking out something new, HOW CAN YOU TALK WHEN YOU HAVEN'T EVEN TRIED THE CONSOLE? So yeah I'm waiting for the Wii, to try it for myself, and maybe I'll get the ps3, but i'm happy with the xbox 360 it's cool I know, but the price for the ps3 is just not at my reach "hey it's simple ==> it's not in my budget.

Who ever thinks you have to stand up during these games are idiots, because the movement only requires your hands(Wario Ware is a diffent case but at the same time it is surpose to be gimmerky, all other games can be done sitting down).....And if you think you look stupid moving around anyways, Then how is the PS3 any diffent????? And just by the way I was really really against the DS I mean I thought it was the stupidest thing ever....But I was wrong SO WRONG, in fact the DS changed what I thought Gaming was all about (I am not surprised it is pwning SONY to Hell). Now just so you know I don't know if the Wii will be sucessful or not but my experience at E3 made it clear that Games are Hellz a Fun on it. I HOPE A LOT THAT A LOT OF GOOD GAMES COME OUT ON IT and that they make the NES,SNES,N64,SEGA GEN., and Turbo FX 16 games Cheap enough.

Also the wii has the most potential to capture nongamers and lasped gamers. Tell me why is it that tons of newspapers, magazines, tv channels, news shows that never have a front page story favorable about videogames gushing over how fun Brain Age and the DS are?

They show old people playing the DS and having fun with it. The DS lite and many DS games are selling out over the US with Europe and other regions looking to follow in the next few months.

They learned their mistakes on the gamecube and DS launch. They have expanded their development teams something that was needed to have been done considering that games now have to have so many people working on them while back in the NES days ten people could crank out a game in under a month. Now those ten people can take years to make a game.

The DS is Great!! little girls and old ladies just think its dandy! Sorry to all the actual gamers out there but Nintendo bailed on you. They knew that they were doomed so they decided to throw in some motion sensor (Wii)capabilities and called it next gen. The ONLY thing they have going for them (and they know this) is their old skool lineup. So if you really need to play Excitebike again then by all means, fall victim once again to the smoke and mirrors nintendo likes to call "inovation!"

It's so easy to pick out the fanboys in these comments.

I'm glad Nintendo is aware of it's past and is trying and betting everything in its power to see that it exceeds past offering.

Iwata is correct in stating the Gamecube's launch momentum had wore off and there weren't any AAA titles for it until October when Mario Sunshine came out. I geuss that period of time allowed the Xbox a period of grace to try to exceed the Gamecube with more units out the door.

The DS is selling extremely well, the Wii is destined to do well if Nintendo keeps the pacing of titles marginally decent. A strong launch isn't everything.

"once the wii comes out it will be popular for a while but will fall short , barley selling more then the GC. "

And you call hitting 8 bottons and rotating your analog stick all day long is new and refreshing? And nobody said anything that the Wii is going to have bad graphics, its just not the main consideration.

I actually hope the Wii will have a low price. I don't mind losing some graphic power as long as I can pay for my tuition and books afterwards.

I can't wait for the wii-mote to come out. Maybe this will get my gaming challenged dad and sister into something I like. It soooo simple, is soooo great . Nobody said hitting back, back-down, down, forward-down, forward, square, square, triangle, circle was the only way to play a game.

Nintendo sounds bullish. The most significant comment seems to be that they won't be haemorrhaging money through hardware sales, as most new tech products do, presumably because Wii's guts aren't much different from Gamecube's. If that means more cash for dev, support and marketing, so much the better.

They're right not to get into a tech arms race, but I would still like to see an HD Wii. Surely that style of gaming would benefit more than any other from a giant screen?

Finally, I'm a bit confused as to what 'hardcore' gaming is. Does it just mean more realistic and violent? I just picked up an old NES and gaming (still) doesn't get more hardcore than Super Mario Bros.

When they say "hardcore", they're talking about the people who play games at least once a day, or until their eyes bleed.

For i am one of them.

On topic, i belive that nintendo have every right to be confident, what with the tidal wave of hype and sucess that nintendo saw at E3.

I've been reading this Nintendo hype for a while now. All these people spouting off about how wonderful this new system is. You guys said the same thing about the GameCube. No one knows if it will get a lot of good games or not. Nintendo comes through with great titles .. but only after numerous delays. It's a neat system with a horrible name and a unique controller. They just better not charge a lot to download the old games.

I have to say, from looking at the Wii-mote demonstrations, it doesn't look like you have to swing it around that much, just using your wrist is enough to play the games, I don't know why people assume you have to stand up.

And how can some of you believe that this new controller style will be boring? I think pressing the standard 8 buttons gets boring, I've been playing games since I was 4 back with the old NES and only lately have I become bored of all games, including PC's. I think this new idea will be great!

And speaking of the DS, my own dad, who hates games, I caught him trying it out and enjoying it. He cant even get the the end of the first level on the original mario game. The DS is fun to play, even if not all of the games use the touch screen feature, most do. With the Wii, I bet it will be the same, not every game will use the motion sensing feature, but I bet most will.

Sony's 'motion sensing' idea is actually kinda dumb, mostly because unlike the wii where you move one hand, on Sony's you'd have to move both entire arms so it will be more difficult, its like controlling a computer mouse with both hands! And they gave up Rumble because they couldn't get both to work at the same time... HAH, Wii did it, they just lost the law suit and didn't want to admit they had lost an important feature.

Well, that's my opinion, GO NINTENDO!

One more thing, is there anyone here who still plays Super Mario 1 hard core every day? No? Is that because it's old? Or because the graphics suck? Or they gameplay is basic? So why would you stick to an old controller style that is a decade old design? If sales of the DS alone show that a new style of gameplay is craved in the gaming industry, then the Wii will be a huge success.

If you read the ttranscript, Iwata says he saw the PS3 motion-tilt (NOT pointer) is not well made. He says the wiimote has been in development much longer and is not hastily made. check it out.

also: "I felt that we were just rushing forward following Moore's Law, or just making new products in the linear extension line following the evolution of semiconductors"

I think Wii will out sell the GC, if people are flocking to DS like moths to a flame the same people should flock to Wii. Nintendo is basically trying to make the experience of playing a DS on a grander scale with its new system by having innovative controls for fun games giving gamers a much needed new way to play games. For that reason, I think people will flock to it, especially if its sold between 229.99-249.99 and software remains at 49.99 its going to be golden. People take games way too seriously, but basically its all about fun and I believe Nintendo will make it so again.

while i do like casual fun games like mario, donkey kong, and all that; i hope that nintendo gets some more mature games in development by third parties. ubisoft is making the first step and lets all hope other developers invest some time and money into the wii. thats what really killed the gamecube. name some good non-nintendo made games... It's a shame that the UK price of DS games in most cases aren't any cheaper than new release prices for PS2 games. My conclusion to why the DS doesn't have such a hold here that it does everywhere else in the world (not to mention why people are still buying PSPs). If Nintendo recognise the fact that cheaper games are a selling point why don't they implement it!.

I think Nintendo will do better but not come out the winner in this next-gen race. I dunno aobut your parents, but mine won't buy a game console, regardless of what games are on it or how to play it, no matter how simple. I feel as though hardcore gamers as well, who already seem to like the controllers with the 20 or so buttons on it will go towards the "real" next-gen consoles for their gaming pleasure. I suspect Nintendo will go up a notch to the number 2 spot. PS3 at the bottom due to high price and not enough good titles becuase the third parties will turn their backs on it from high production costs. Xbox 360 looks to be the winner in this with an "in the middle" price and some good games on the way.

Based on Megamanxzero35:

a MS motion controller would not be new or innovative since nintendo did it first. their whole system is based around this new controller and appealing to more then just 13-35 year old males in gaming. sony is making a motion sensitive controller AFTER hearing about nintendos and all the hype.
--

The MS Controller could still be asked to do innovate things by the designers. The hardware wouldn't be new, but the way the hardware is used is still the battle that is shaping up to take place.

From what I've heard, Sony did have plans for motion sensor controller patents and such on the books before the announcement of the Wii. Not to say their move wasn't inspired by the Wii.

It's still shaping up to be a fight. It isn't well known if the Wii and the Wii input system will ultimately change gaming. But no game company is going to pass on the oppurtunity to provide the experience if they see that it is a big deal. Consider it, the companies hedging their bets. Playing it safe. And remember a real test of measure isn't being their first, it's doing it best.

I like the part about breaking away from Moore's law. A nagging voice in my head kept saying "I would have been content with my XBOX for another few years" even after I had gotten an XBOX 360. But knowing that support was going to be pulled for the older system, I pressed forward just for technology's sake.

One of the ironies of this console transition is hearing the Sony fans proclaim how much more powerful the PS3 will be over the XBOX 360 and the Wii. Those same fans spent the last five years crowing "It's all about the games" while they played the least powerful console on the planet (the PS2). Now it's all about seven synergistic processing units...heh.

Nintendo has taken the gameplay as king mantra to heart. We'll see whether they can turn that into a profitable business strategy in the coming year.

I think the Wii will sweep the console wars this generation. The PS3 will only be bought by brainless fanboys until the price comes below $300, the 360 is just now starting to show it's mettle, but it's more of the same. If you look at the polls on gamefaqs' front page every day, you'd have seen the one on June 2nd: Would you buy a Wii at launch for $250? 69% of the over 71,000 people that voted said, "probably", "definitely", or "already... preordered". If you look at the figures for the other two consoles, nothing stands a chance.

NIntendo should actually do very well in the generation of console wars. With an estimated price point of $249.99 (half of the low end PS3) with games estmated to sell for $40- $50 dollars (or even less potentially) the Wii will be the most pocket-book friendly of the new systems.

Aside from pirce however you have to take into consideration what Iwata said during E3 - that the Wii is not just a next generation system - it is the start of a new generation of systems. While Sony and Microsoft essentially making upgraded versions of their old systems Nintendo is making an all new system. Nintendo may finally reclaim its crown at the top of the gaming world!

I'm one of the people that Nintendo is targeting, as I've been looking for a great, new, innovative game experience. I've been playing games for most of my life, and am really getting bored with them.

I've been thinking about a handheld for awhile now, weighing the DS and the PSP; and the DS, with the touch screen, gives something new to the market. After considering the DS for a couple years now, the Lite remake (and games like Brain Age) sealed the deal for me to purchase one...and I've been enjoying it, hours at a time, each day since buying it last week. And I've been watching, with baited breath, for everything Nintendo does with the Wii...and I'm eagerly anticipating the Wii launch this fall.

I bought into the Xbox, and got relatively bored with hit; I play a friend's PS2 from time to time, and get bored with it...but Nintendo truly are attempting to give us something new and different. And I most certainly am buying into that!

I believe the Wii will be the stepping stone to a whole gaming generation for the future.

Oh yeah and regarding about what Fallout_red has said about MS liking the motion sensor tech and how they want to incorporate it to the 360, I read on wikipedia with a link to MTV that MS did not like the idea of the motion sensor tech and criticize about the technology and now he wants to use the tech! so here is the man who criticized about the Wii remote and know wants to use that tech. Is it me or does that sound stupid.

Anyway the Wii puns are just being very childish so the puns should stop.

All this 'Touch Generations' stuff isn't really about turning adults on to gaming, it's about KEEPING the 20/30-something gamers who might be getting tired of their consoles. Oddly enough you seem to enter your second gaming childhood quite early — as an adolescent I was all for Doom and Quake, but now prefer WarioWare, Donkey Konga etc.

The real game war isn't between Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft, it's between console and PC gaming. Microsoft has tried to bring the two closer, as Sega tried to with the Dreamcast; Nintendo is trying to differentiate them more, stressing the console-as-party-game; I'm not sure what Sony is up to with PS3. I think all the next-gen consoles are sailing close to the wind and I wouldn't be surprised to see the whole market crash the way it did in the early 80s.

And I don't think R.O.B. could save the (console) universe again…

nintendo has done the best thing they could have done this nextgen. the wii's motion sensing cannot be copied by either system becase the system it's self is built around the tech.

so listen to my predictions-

1. Wii- why? cheap, fun and has the wii-mote
2. PS3- why? street cred, most powerful, Final Fantasy 13
3. Xbox 360- why? crappy hardware, sytem always crashs, but will have Halo 3

Wii will outsell PS3, if only because of the price difference will attract ppl more to 360 and the women and older people which will join the gaming ring at Nintendo. I can't say if Xbox will outsell Wii or not, but I'm sure Sony loses this round. They're pushing with costly hardware, and its a known fact that people given a choice of similar products always go to the cheaper one(anyone remember betamax? I still have a working one, and the things i taped 10 years ago sound better than a 6 month vhs recording)

My predictions for console cycle is simply that sony will lose...the first place is up for grabs
